Frequently Asked Questions

What should we wear for our portrait session?

Clothing plays an important role in creating timeless portraits. We recommend simple, coordinated clothing in solid colors that reflects your personal style. During your consultation, we’ll guide you through wardrobe suggestions to ensure everything works beautifully together.

Who should be included in the portrait?

Most families choose to include everyone in the household, and we also photograph smaller groupings such as just the children, parents, or individuals. Including multiple combinations allows you to select portraits that best fit your home and your family story.

What if my children don’t cooperate during the session?

Families often worry about this, but there’s no need. David has spent more than 30 years working with children and families, and his relaxed, personality-based approach helps everyone feel comfortable very quickly. Rather than forcing stiff poses, he simply guides the session in a natural way so genuine expressions emerge. Some of the most meaningful portraits come from the moments in between.

Do you photograph pets?

Yes. For many families, pets are an important part of the family and we are happy to include them in your portrait session. We simply ask that pets remain on a leash while in the studio and that they are comfortable around people.

What happens during the consultation?

Your consultation is a relaxed conversation where we learn about your ideas for the portrait. We will discuss who will be included, clothing suggestions, and how you might like to display your finished artwork in your home.

How long does the portrait session take?

Most portrait sessions, including viewing and selecting your images, take approximately three hours in total. This allows time for your session, a short break, and then viewing your portraits together.

When do we see our portraits?

You will typically view your portraits the same day as your session after a short break. This allows you to see the images while the experience is still fresh and exciting.

How do we choose our portraits?

After your session, David will guide you through viewing your images and help you narrow down your favorites. During the projection, you will see your favorites true-to-size to help you choose the perfect size and finish for your home.

What if we’re not sure where to hang our portraits?

Before your session, we recommend identifying a few possible display locations in your home. Taking simple wall measurements or photos of those spaces allows us to help design artwork that fits perfectly in your home.

Where do families usually display their portraits?

Most families choose to display their portraits in a central gathering space within their home—such as a living room, great room, or dining area—where family and guests can enjoy them every day. During your consultation and viewing appointment, we will help you design artwork that fits beautifully within your space and complements the style of your home.

Do you retouch the portraits?

Yes. Every portrait is carefully hand-retouched by our studio’s master retouch artist. Subtle refinements are made while preserving the natural personality and authenticity of each image.

How much do clients typically invest?

Portrait artwork begins at $500 including your session, with most families investing between $1,000 and $3,000 depending on the portraits and artwork they select.

Can we purchase additional portraits or gifts?

Absolutely. Many families choose additional portraits for grandparents or other meaningful spaces in their home. Once you’ve selected your favorite images, we can help you design additional portraits or collections that complement your main artwork.

How long will our portraits last?

Our portraits are created with the intention that they will be enjoyed for generations. Each image is carefully photographed, professionally printed, and individually hand-retouched to ensure the final artwork remains timeless and enduring.

Do we need photography experience?

Not at all. Most families who visit our studio have never had a professional portrait session before. David will guide you through the entire process so you feel relaxed and comfortable.

How do we schedule a session?

The first step is scheduling a consultation so we can discuss your ideas and begin planning your portrait experience. You can request your consultation directly through our website or contact the studio by phone at (423) 378-5044.

What makes a portrait from your studio different?

Our portraits are carefully guided, artistically photographed, and meticulously hand-retouched. The result is not simply a photograph, but finished artwork designed to live beautifully in your home for generations.

What size portrait should we choose?

The ideal portrait size often depends on where it will be displayed. Larger portraits typically create the most visual impact and allow the personalities within the portrait to be fully appreciated. During your ordering appointment, we can project your portraits at actual to help you choose the perfect size.

Is there any obligation when scheduling a consultation?

Not at all. Your consultation is simply an opportunity for us to get to know one another and discuss your ideas for a portrait. We’ll talk about who you would like to include, clothing suggestions, and how you might display your finished portraits. If it feels like the right fit, we can move forward with planning your session.
